Countryside Rides

Brentwood Countryside Management Service (a division of Brentwood Borough Council) produce two leaflets showing the rights of way for horseriders and cyclists in Brentwood Borough. One leaflet covers the area to the south of the A12, including Shenfield, Ingrave, Herongate, Hutton, Mountnessing and Essex County Council's Thorndon Park. A second map is available for the area to the north of the A12.

Between Hutton and Herongate there are a series of interlinking bridleways. The countryside here has much to offer with open farmland and attractive woodland. There are also many interesting historical houses including Ingrave Hall, Hutton Hall and Heron Hall. The bridleways in the Mountnessing area allow you to cross open farmland, pass woodland and see historic sights including Bacon's Farm, St.Giles Church and Mountnessing Hall. Most of the roads in this area are quiet but it is important that care be taken when crossing the railway and approaching the A129 Rayleigh Road. Care must also be taken when coming from Blind Lane where you must cross the Billericay Road to enter into Green Lane.

The area to the south of Brentwood has many woodlands. Those owned by Brentwood Borough Council and Essex County council can be ridden through using permissive horserides, simply follow the marked paths. The rides cover parts of Thorndon Country Park, Warley Gap, Donkey Lane Plantations, Hartswood and areas of Herongate. They can be linked to those around Herongate by crossing the A128, but take great care crossing the A128 and riding along The Avenue. It is important to note that at present the permissive horserides do not go through Thorndon South.

Parking for horseboxes is available at Thorndon Country Park at either of the two car parks at Thorndon North. Parking of horseboxes is not allowed at Thorndon South. Contact Essex County Council Ranger Service (01277 211250) for more details.

For rights of way in neighbouring areas, contact Basildon District Council (01268 533333) and Chelmsford Borough Council (01245 606606).
